The cousins had many similar names!) What is now Tennessee was initially part of North Carolina, and later part of the Southwest Territory. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. This explains why some researchers say that William was born in North Carolina and other records and/or researchers record his birth in Tennessee. Historical record of his parents show the area was still North Carolina when William was born; the same area that later became Carter County, Tennessee.
